Is it the amazing, indescribable chicken salad on french bread with lettuce and tomatoes, toasted or the tangy, fountain diet coke that keeps me coming back? It may be a combination of both, but I don’t know one person in Houston who has been to the French House and not loved it. If I had to choose one place to eat for every meal for the rest of my life, it would be the French House. This little haven for delicious sandwiches, soup and salads located off of Westheimer and Fountain View is one place I could not live without.
Walk in and get in line (unless you are me and my friends who are the first ones there) and get ready to order. My traditional order– a chicken salad sandwich on french bread and french onion soup. The chicken salad has a hint of what I have always guess to be vinegar and is so finely purreed, you don’t have to worry about the strange chunks that you normally find in chicken salad. The french onion soup with the perfect amount of cheese, onions and the little crouton in the middle is the perfect starter to eliminate the anticipation of your sandwich arrival.
Feeling a little adventurous? Try a half and half (made this one up myself). What is a half and half you wonder? Let me tell you, its a half California- a smoked turkey breast sandwich with tomato, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, melted Swiss cheese and “special sauce” (thousand island) on the side and half a chicken salad sandwich. You better be feeling hungry for this one because its a big order, but definitely do-able. If you haven’t been to French House and live in Houston, you have not lived my friend. It is home to many fond food memories for me that I will never forget and always cherish.
